Join NYC-Parents in Action (NYC-PIA) for an engaging and informative webinar with Jodi Gold, MD and our moderator Geoffrey Golia, LCSW. Dr. Gold is a board certified adult and pediatric psychiatrist and Director of the Gold Center in NYC.

This facilitated conversation discuss:

  1. Digital technology’s impact on the developing brain and mental health.

  2. Invasive prevalence of gambling and sports betting in the lives of young people.

  3. Body image: realistic expectations versus perfectionism.

  4. Practical strategies for healthy digital habits.

  5. Tools to navigate tough digital challenges: privacy, risks and vulnerabilities such as anxiety and depression.

  6. How to recognize when behaviors become addictive in connection with body image issues and sports betting.

Questions that will be addressed include:

 

  • How can I prevent my teenager from placing small sports bets? 

  • Body image is everywhere – TV, social media, advertising. How can we help support our kids in understanding that most of the photos they see are doctored and not real people?

  • How do we explain that constantly checking how one looks and how others look can be detrimental?

  • When does gambling online become an addictive behavior and how can we explain this problematic relationship?

Our Speaker:

Jodi Gold, M.D

 

Dr. Jodi Gold is a board-certified adult and pediatric psychiatrist, with clinical expertise in child & adolescent pharmacology, reproductive psychiatry, parenting & divorce, psychotherapy of anxiety, mood disorders and the management of digital technology.

She led the child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient department at Weill Cornell College of Medicine from 2006 to 2012 and has spoken nationally and internationally to physicians, educators and parents about her developmental approach to managing digital technology in children and adolescents, which led to the publication of her book Screen-Smart Parenting: How to Find Balance and Benefit in Your Child’s Use of Social Media, Apps, and Digital Devices in 2014.

Dr. Gold completed her medical training at the University of Tennessee and her residency in psychiatry at Weill Cornell College of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in pediatric psychiatry at Cornell. She also completed a clinical fellowship in infant psychiatry that focused on reproductive psychiatry and early parenting and attachment. During her training, she received awards from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Association of Women Psychiatrists (AWP).

Geoffrey M. Golia, LCSW


Geoffrey M. Golia
 is a New York City-based psychotherapist licensed to practice in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. He received his bachelor’s degree from the New School University’s Eugene Lang College and his master’s degree in Social Work from NYU’s Silver School of Social Work. Geoffrey has been providing individual and group psychotherapy for over a decade with a focus treating adolescents and young adults with substance use and mental health issues. An experienced non-profit executive and leader, he has held positions of leadership at Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO), Turnbridge, New York Center for Living, and the New York City Criminal Justice Agency, and is a proud member of the Advisory Board of New York City-Parents in Action.
