The shifting landscape of the Covid-19 Pandemic has impacted everyone over the past two years, with feelings of stress and anxiety especially prevalent among children and teens. This workshop will engage parents in an interactive discussion with Dr. Joanna Stern and Dr. Laurie Freeman on how to provide structure and increase positive behavior, utilizing proactive techniques drawn from the most up-to-date behavioral research.
Our Speaker:
Joanna R. Stern, PsyD, Senior Director, Mood Disorders Center, Child Mind Institute
Director, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy Programs
Our Moderator:
Laurie Freeman, PhD, Licensed Psychologist, certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist/Supervisor (EFT), and a certified AEDP therapist
NYC-Parents in Action recently hosted a substantive and important online seminar, "It's Ok To Say Suicide: Talking With Your Kids About Hard Things," moderated by our own Dr. Laurie Freeman and featuring Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth and John MacPhee of the JED Foundation.
Our speakers covered a wide range of topics, starting with a couple of sobering facts:
Drug overdose and suicide are the first and second leading causes of death among young people."
"The rates of self-harm and suicide started to change in 2010-11 after the rise in popularity of social media."
Given the importance of supporting our children's mental and emotional well-being, we are offering our community a chance to register for and receive a link to the recorded event. We encourage everyone in the community who may have missed it to watch. Recording is available until November 27th.
*This live event has now passed, but if you pay the registration fee, you will be emailed the recording.*
Strapping our kids securely into the passenger seat of life may help us feel better as parents, but it isn't doing anything to help them forge an independent future for themselves. Free play and exploration is the vitamin of childhood, and Lenor Skenazy, Co-founder and President, Let Grow, is ready to help us step back and allow our children to step up.
Join fellow parents as we speak with Dr. Marian Tanofsky-Kraff, PhD, Eating Disorder and Body Size Researcher and Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Tanofsky-Kraff will help us learn how to identify early signs of disordered eating and weight problems in children and teens. She will also discuss which kids are at risk for eating and weight concerns (Hint: It might not be who you think) and how to talk about eating and weight with your kids (They actually do want to talk!).
What is life REALLY like for NYC Independent High School students? For over three decades Teen Scene has provided insight into just this question. Join us as this year's 16 teen speak openly on a range of relevant topics including: academics, stress, parties, drinking, drugs, gender identity, consent and mental health.
Join Distinguished Panelists John Allman (Head of School, Trinity); José De Jesús (Head of School, Dalton); and Mark Greene (Author, Founder of Remaking Manhood) to Discuss the Evolving Role of Dads.
Fathers Forum 2023 will take place in person at Trinity School and via Zoom.
In-person attendance at the event is BY PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY. There will be NO TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR. Sales for in-person tickets will close on Wednesday, March 1.
A recording of the event will be made available to all pre-registered attendees.
