A new school year begins and with it comes a flurry of excitement and dedication from students, parents, teachers, administrators; and from us, at NYC-Parents in Action Inc., a continued commitment to support all our wonderful New York City independent schools.
We would like to take a moment to introduce ourselves, as this year’s Co-Presidents of NYC Parents in Action, Inc., also known as PIA. We are Lucy Martin Gianino & Ann-Marie Myers and are both dedicated to having PIA remain on the cutting edge as a parent resource for our NYC families.
Whatever you are talking about, we are talking about too! PIA is approaching its 40th anniversary of providing parenting information and opportunities for parents to connect in open discussion on various topics. One of our most popular services is our “Parent Talks,” scheduled meetings for parents of the same grade to come together with two of our trained facilitators to discuss their thoughts, concerns, joys and feelings as their children move through the school year.
Our original mission in 1979 addressed drug and alcohol use among teens, however, over the years we have expanded our focus to include a full range of parenting topics for Pre-K through 12th grade including mental health; cultural, gender and economic diversity; consent; navigating social media; communication strategies, both parent to child and parent to parent; technology, and more.
Each year PIA offers seminars, a luncheon for the school class representatives, our signature Teen Scene, and Fathers Forum. Our first event of the year will be our Oct 25th Fall Seminar titled “Emotional Wellness Begins at Home.” We are partnering with the JED Foundation to bring together panelists in the mental health profession to give parents tools for raising emotionally well-adjusted children. Be sure to check out ALL of our events, resources, and our new blog “A Practicing Parent” right here on our website, www.parentsinaction.org. Plus, follow us on Facebook, NYC-Parents in Action and on Twitter @parentsNaction.
We send best wishes to all of our parents and families for a fun and productive year!
All the best,
Lucy Martin Gianino & Ann-Marie Myers, Co-Presidents
