NYC-PIA Parenting Scene is an open discussion with parents, educators and thought-leaders to delve into best practices for raising and educating 

our children today.

 

Join NYC Heads of School, Robbie Pennoyer (Grace Church School) and Tom Kelly (Horace Mann School) with award-winning journalist and author Jennifer Wallace as they explore the impact of achievement culture and other forces impacting our children, our families, and our society, as well as best practices for fostering resilience, building connections and focusing on internal growth. With opening remarks by Trinity Head of School, Alexis Mulvihill.

  

Open to fathers, mothers, educators and all caregivers to children. Everyone is welcome 

to come and learn from our education and parenting experts.

Robbie Pennoyer

Robbie Pennoyer, Head of School at Grace Church School, is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Divinity School, where he studied religion and literature, pastoral ministry, and school leadership. Before coming to Grace, Robbie served as a teaching fellow at the Shrewsbury School in England; a seventh-grade teacher and secondary school advisor at St. Bernard’s School; and an Upper School admissions officer at Riverdale Country School. He also spent fourteen summers working at Camp Lanakila, where he directed the music program, supervised counselors, and trained staff in teaching and counseling. Robbie was ordained to the priesthood in October 2016 and volunteers as a priest associate at the Church of the Heavenly Rest.

Robbie came to Grace Church School in July of 2017 as the Assistant Head of School and Director of Studies, and in July of 2022 he became Grace’s tenth Head of School. Outside of his administrative duties, he leads weekly chapel services in the Early Childhood division and teaches classes in the Lower, Middle, and High School.

Robbie is married to Polly Klyce Pennoyer, a bank regulatory lawyer who works in the New York Department of Financial Services. Together they have three children.

Jennifer Wallace

Wallace is an award-winning journalist and author of the book Never Enough: When Achievement Pressure Becomes Toxic – and What We Can Do About It.  She is a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post and appears on national television to discuss her articles and relevant topics in the news.

After graduating from Harvard College, Wallace began her journalism career at CBS “60 Minutes,” where she was part of a team that won The Robert F. Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism. She is a Journalism Fellow at the The Center for Parent and Teen Communication at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Wallace serves on the board of the Coalition for the Homeless in New York City, where she lives with her husband and their three children.

Dr. Thomas Kelly

Dr. Kelly is Head at Horace Mann School, an independent day school in Bronx, NY.  In addition to his administrative duties, he is a member of the Upper Division faculty where he has taught both Ethics in School and Society and Advanced Placement Psychology. Beyond the walls of Horace Mann, Dr. Kelly’s commitment to the community at large includes serving as a member of the Board of Directors for Early Steps, Riverdale Senior Services, Inc., The IDEAL School and the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance. He is also a member of the advisory boards serving the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and the Pre-College Program at Columbia University. 

In addition to his N-12 duties, Dr. Kelly has held the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor of Education at several graduate programs, including Teachers College, Columbia University and City College of New York.  He holds M.A. and M.Ed. degrees in education, as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in behavior disorders and research.
